General description: The Institute of Orthopaedics of Chinese People’s Liberation Army General Hospital (301 Military Hospital) is the Key Laboratory of the armed forces and one of the most important units of the military in China. It is the home unit of China Association of Pharmaceutical Biotechnology bone tissue bank branch and the Beijing Institute of Biomedical Engineering Tissue Engineering Professional Committee is an influential tissue engineering research and application base in China and worldwide.
Expertise: The institute has addressed brilliant achievements in a wide range of basic and clinical research, including artificial joints, nerve damage repair, trauma care, bone and cartilage tissue engineering, bone tumor treatment, medical biomaterials, avascular necrosis, microsurgery, etc.
Role in the project: The Institute of Orthopaedics of Chinese People’s Liberation Army General Hospital (301 Military Hospital) is involve in the assessment, development and translation of medical devices and new tissue engineering in the field of Orthopaedic and Trauma surgeries, interacting with all consortium partners.
Key personnel: Prof. Shi-bi Lu has practiced medicine for more than 40 years. He has a vast clinical experience in the field of orthopedics and has an outstanding contribution to this field. He is the first person in China to design and develop the domestic cemented and cementless endoprosthesis, which has been widely used in China for total hip replacement. He has been constantly engaged in the research about peripheral nerve injury and repair. He has been instrumental in the field of compression injury of nerve, neurotropism in nerve regeneration and acellular nerve allografting. Ha has developed surgical treatment of scoliosis with Shape Memory Alloy, opening up the research of biocompatibility and biomechanics of this alloy and medical science in the world. He has used microwave hyperthermia method to treat malignant bone tumor. He also has an extensive series of published research on bone growth, tissue engineering in bone and cartilage and peripheral nerve which had a significant impact in the research and treatment of bone fracture, joint diseases, joint injury and nerve repair.
